Central to this book is an adventure: The theatres Nanzikambe Arts, Malawi and Theater Konstanz, Germany are entering into a partnership. Three years and over fifty flights later, a cast consisting of Malawian and German actors is treading the boards and presenting the world premiere of a jointly devised play. Actors, directors, and project managers report from their perspective. Furthermore the project is analyzed in the context of a broader discourse: As an examination about the status of art within the North-South dialogue and within the international development cooperation.
Welcoming words by the President of the Republic of Malawi / Grußwort der Präsidentin der Republik Malawi
It is with great pleasure that I convey a greeting for this publication. This book is more than a documentary about an international theatre project. It is a testimony about the cooperation of artists across continents and cultural borders.
The number of international projects is high, also in the field of the arts there is various funding and involvement. This often leads to an invitation of African theatres to European and American centres. The tours resulting from these funds are a very valuable and rewarding experience for African artists. All the more here in Malawi, the warm heart of Africa, where we are going through economically difficult times on the way to a new prosperous political future and are not able yet to substantially fund the arts. Therefore we are very thankful for the involvement of foreign states and organizations on this field.
The three-year cooperation between Nanzikambe Arts from Malawi and the German Theater Konstanz described here is so particular, so exceptional, because it is fundamentally based on the equal collaboration of artists from both countries. Directors, authors, actors, technicians, administrators of both theatres were part of developing the joint production, which came into existence in such equality that its components, its ingredients could not be segregated anymore.
Despite their backgrounds, not limited by any restraint, free in content and thought, people of two cultures formed one team working jointly on one artistic project. This aspect of the project is extraordinary and could be an example for many more international projects in the arts or on other fields. I am glad that these two theatres collaborated so well, that their performances were so successful. I would like to thank the artists, the initiators, and the supporters of Crossing Borders — from Lake to Lake. May this cooperation bear many more fruits in future.

Grußwort des Bundespräsidenten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland / Welcoming words by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany
Many people say that theatre is as old as humanity itself. In all cultures you can find people, who slip into other roles and, by doing this, tell another story. Only few know how old the relationship between European theatre and Africa is: The Greek historian Herodotus described, for instance, how the character Dionysos, the founding father of the Attic theatre, was inspired by the ancient Egyptian festival in honour of Osiris.
The several years of cooperation between Theater Konstanz and Nanzikambe Arts are an excellent example of mutual inspiration. This book offers an insight into the German and Malawian ensemble’s and the supporting staff’s various experiences on stage and also a look behind the scenes. Moreover, it highlights the importance of cultural cooperation for development cooperation in general.
I hope that all readers are caught by a spark of enthusiasm for this cooperation. Not only is this an inspiration for our neighbourhood with Malawi, the “warm heart of Africa”, but with the entire continent.

Grußwort des Ministers für Bundesrat, Europa und internationale Angelegenheiten des Landes Baden-Württemberg / Welcoming words by the Minister for the Bundesrat, Europe and International Affairs of Baden-Württemberg
Crossing Borders — from Lake to Lake — this was the slogan under which the cooperation between Theater Konstanz and the Malawian theatre Nanzikambe Arts in Blantyre took place. Konstanz is given distinction by the lake of Konstanz, Blantyre by its proximity to the Lake Malawi, which is located two hundred kilometres away and which is one of the biggest lakes in the world. In the theatre project, artists from Konstanz and Blantyre asked themselves: Are there more commonalities? How can differences be overcome?
The financial gap between Africa and Europe is humongous. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. The theatre Nanzikambe Arts works as a non-governmental organisation without any financial support from the government. The budget of Theater Konstanz, on the other hand, is subsidized by the municipality, the federal state, and the state.
Over the past three years, productions were exchanged and plays performed together on stage. While in Konstanz, the productions were performed in a big auditorium, in Malawi, they were either open air performances or took place in clubs. Nonetheless: both theatres could exchange views on important issues like globalization, the financial crisis, development politics or migration on a level playing field. This change of perceptions was always enriching.
I am especially pleased about one thing: everyone, who was involved in this extraordinary theatre project, also implemented with a great deal of commitment what the federal state government has been aiming to achieve with its initiative Welt:Bürger gefragt! (World:Citizens are in demand!) as part of the development policy dialogue in Baden-Württemberg. Together, we have to discuss about global interrelations and actively include the people of our country when designing guidelines for future development cooperation.
In this regard, the project Crossing Borders — from Lake to Lake can give new impetus. Art and culture need to be included in development politics. They constitute a meaningful part of civil society — as a place for encountering people, exchanging ideas, emotions and stories. In theatre, abstract topics from development politics can be conveyed to the public in a lively manner.
I wish the organisers of follow-up projects with African theatres, which are financially supported by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, all the best, as well as a fruitful and inspiring cooperation — on stage and behind the scenes.
